Ottawa announces the return of several measures to protect North Atlantic right whales.
DFO is changing the dynamic closure protocol for fishing grounds that was in place last year. This will particularly affect snow crab: the visual or sound observation of a whale will result in the dynamic closure of an area of 2000 km2 for at least 15 days. After nine days of closure, if a whale is spotted in the area again, the seasonal closure will be triggered.
In 2020, where there were no deaths or entanglements in Canadian waters, the seasonal closure was implemented from the second observation, without delay.
