ASIRT investigating use of force during arrest: Edmonton Police Service

Edmonton, Alberta – On Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at approximately 12:20 a.m., tactical members were assisting with a mischief call in the area of 76 Avenue and 96 Street. Tactical members arrested a man, during which time force was applied, including a deployment of a conducted energy weapon (CEW).

The 39-year-old male, who sustained minor injuries, was treated at the scene by EMS. He was later charged with possession of a weapon (x2), possession of a controlled substance, assault of peace officer and several outstanding warrants.

As a result of the use of force, the Director of Law Enforcement was notified and has since directed ASIRT to lead the investigation into this incident. As such, the EPS will not be providing further comment.

Two responding tactical officers have been relieved from duty with pay.
