Coaldale RCMP searching for 5 year old boy camping with his family along the Old Man River south of Picture Butte

Picture Butte, Alberta – At approximately 1:50 pm today the Coaldale RCMP responded to a call of a missing 5 year old boy. The boy, who was camping with his family in an area along the Old Man River south of Picture Butte, is believed to have wandered from the camping area to the river to play.

The Coaldale RCMP, the Picture Butte Fire Department and Lethbridge Search and Rescue are actively searching the area. RCMP Air Services, RCMP Police Dog Services and the Picture Butte Fire Department rescue boat have also been engaged and are on scene and assisting.

Due to the extremely poor weather conditions and approaching darkness, the search will be suspended at nightfall and will resume at first light tomorrow morning.

The search team is fully resourced with trained personal, and the RCMP would like to ask the public and media to avoid the area south of Picture Butte, along the Old Man River, so that their efforts are unencumbered. The RCMP recognizes that the community is willing to assist but are asking that they do so by keeping the child and the child’s family in their thoughts and prayers.
