Demands of women’s groups for gender equality

The Table de concertation des groups de femmes de la Gaspésie et des Îles-de-la-Madeleine calls for improvements in its fight for gender equality.

The organization is taking advantage of International Women’s Day to demand equity, particularly considering the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the project officer, Sara Ternoir, women suffer the impacts in a greater proportion given their family responsibilities, particularly in the current context.

The problem of the lack of space in daycare is also in the news since women cannot return to the labor market.

In his opinion, improvements are desirable in order to re-establish a fairness that has been claimed for so long by the various organizations.

According to Sara Ternoir, the government must recognize that the coronavirus pandemic is weakening the situation of women and that it is high time that improvements were made to establish equity between men and women.

Almost 60% of women in the world work in the informal economy, earn less, save less and are at greater risk of falling into poverty.
