Ellis reportedly used various schemes to defraud individuals, all of which included claims of partnerships with National Hockey League (NHL) players and other local and national organizations. In each instance, complainants were reportedly asked to invest in items or events whose sale would result in significant financial returns. Ellis reportedly used a variety of tactics to add legitimacy to these schemes, including impersonating professionals in e-mails.

Following the investigation, detectives confirmed that none of the reported individuals or organizations were aware of these investment projects or in partnership with Ellis, and the products and events intended for profitable sale did not exist.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021, investigators arrested and charged Nickolas Ellis with fraud over $5000 (x13), attempted fraud over $5000, fraud under $5,000 (x3), personation (x3), utter a forged document (x3) and personating a peace officer. He has since been released.

Investigators believe there may be other complainants and are encouraging anyone who believes they have been defrauded by Ellis to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or #377 from a mobile phone. Anonymous information can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.p3tips.com/250
