Solidarité Gaspésie finds Gaspé Énergies’ protest against the Minister of Natural Resources concerning the drilling of an oil well on its Galt site near Gaspé worrying.
Since Monday, the Court of Quebec is seized of the file. The company rejects the decision of Minister Jonatan Julien who refused last October to issue an authorization for the drilling of a well.
Article 23 of the exploration activities regulation prohibits any drilling within 1000 meters of a watercourse. According to Solidarité Gaspésie spokesperson Carol Saucier, the Galt 6 well does not respect this limit and is reviewing a study carried out in 2016 on behalf of Junex, which was the owner at that time.
Solidarité Gaspésie believes that a gain by Gaspé Énergies, in court, would weaken the regulations on hydrocarbons. According to Carol Saucier, the Minister of Natural Resources, Jonatan Julien, must maintain his position and defend his regulations.
