The population of Gaspésie increased by nearly 285 people in 2019-2020.
The Institut de la statistique du Québec has just published its demographic report between July 1, 2019 and July 1, 2020. During this period, the number of people living in the Gaspé has gone from 90,000 400 to nearly 90,000 700 people. .
The Gaspé is therefore part of a national trend that shows growth in several rural regions and a slowdown in large centers.
The increase in the population of Gaspé by 285 people represents an increase of 3.1 per 1,000 inhabitants, compared to the provincial average of 8.5. Demographer Nathalie Deschêne explains that this is still an interesting increase for the region:
Growth was particularly interesting in the Islands and in Bonaventure, while it was negative in the Côte-de-Gaspé and Haute-Gaspé:
Demography is relatively stable in Avignon and Rocher-Percé, again according to the Institut de la statistique du Québec.
Note that the region has a positive migratory balance of nearly 700 people, its best result since the compilation of data in 2001. Arrivals were much more numerous than departures, but the number of deaths is still higher than the number of births.
